Reward Offered for Stolen Radioactive Device

May 13, 2005

An unidentified company is offering a $500 "no questions asked" reward for a radioactive device stolen off a truck.

A portable moisture-density gauge was stolen from a truck parked at the Residence Inn, Marriott on Fairforest Road in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The device contains two low-level radiation sources and is locked inside a large bright yellow plastic shipping case.

The device poses a threat only if someone tampers with it.

Earlier this year police in Fall River, Massachusetts arrested a man for stealing a truck that contained radioactive material that was being used in medical studies. And in 2004 A Georgia man was arrested on charges that he stole a device containing radioactive materials from a pickup truck parked outside a Norfolk, Virginia Wal-Mart.
