Uranium Plants Plan Lay Offs

paraphrased by Steve Waldrop

850 workers will be layed off by the U.S. Enrichment Corporation, a company that owns and operates The United States only two uranium enrichment plants. These lay offs affect approximately 22% of the company's work force.

The company will distribute the reduction of the work force between its plants in Paducah, Kentucky and Piketon, Ohio. The plants have a combined total of almost 3800 employees.

Reasons given for the cuts include a money losing deal to purchase Russia's uranium stockpile and sell it to utility companies around the world, and because of falling prices for enriched uranium, which is used to fuel nuclear power plants.
