Nuclear laundry site upheld

by Jennifer Hazen - March 10, 1999

Columbia, South Carolina residents' attempts to remove Interstate Nuclear Services Corp.'s (INS) plant from Rosewood Drive (a residential neighborhood) have been rejected.  INS operates the only commercial nuclear laundry in South Carolina.  This facility cleans radiation from uniforms and other reusable materials from generating plants and other nuclear facitlities.

The operating permit for the nuclear laundry facility was upheld.  This permit may now go to state health officials to consider. The lawyer for the parties will ask the state health board to review the ruling.  This ruling also requires INS to store the nuclear waste farther away from resident, but allows for a longer storage time.
