2001 Gunderson Award

Hal Stuckey

By: Elizabeth Nelson

The International Registry of Radiation Safety Officers (IRRSO) is proud to announce the recipient of the 2001 Gunderson Award - Hal Stuckey, International Radiation Safety Coordination for Cryovac/ Sealed Air Corporation in Duncan, South Carolina. Mr. Stuckey has been a major factor in the highly successful safety program for Cryovac's Worldwide Electron Beam Processing Systems and Process Gauges. December 2001 marked Mr. Stuckey's 35th year at Cryovac. He began his radiation safety work at Cryovac by supervising the shielding design of the many electron beam systems employed by Cryovac - then a division of W.R. Grace & Company. In 1994, Mr. Stuckey was promoted to the director of International Liaison (ECL Technology and Safety). Four years later, he was appointed to EH&S Global Steering Committee. Keeping together a well-run radiation safety program is an accomplishment by itself, but Mr. Stuckey is also proud of his company-wide implementation of management training concerning radiation safety. Cryovac is unique in this regard.

Mr. Stucky was born October 1, 1936 in the small South Carolina town of Hemmingway. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Carolina in 1958. His first "out-of-college" job dealt with paper converting equipment design. Eight years later, he started at Cryovac.

When Mr. Stucky is not busy at Cryovac, he and his wife, Leila, are avid ballroom dancers and gardeners. The couple has two children, Mary and Bo, and one grandson James, III. He enjoys hunting and spends most of his free time with the boy scouts. He is currently a member of the National Board representing the Blue Ridge Council. His 40 years working with Boy Scouts have all been on a volunteer basis. He is a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award for volunteer work in scouting. Right now, Mr. Stucky's chief responsibility is fundraising for the program.

According to Mr. Stuckey, professional interests are also important to keep one current on radiation trends. He is a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers and Project Management Institute.

To help other companies improve their radiation safety programs, Mr. Stuckey suggests implementing an Internet website on radiation troubleshooting and safety.

The RAD Journal and IRRSO congratulate Mr. Stuckey on his Gunderson Award. Keep up the great radiation safety work at Cryovac.
